Prom Flowers

The cumbersome corsage that flopped around while a young woman danced, has faded away. Today, corsages are as unique as a young woman's personality. Some choose to wear wrist corsages in bright and bold colors, while others choose to wear the traditional pastel carnations laced with soft ribbons. Some opt for a single calla lily or orchid nosegay to hold as they walk into the prom. The only tradition that remains the same is the purpose of the corsage. It should complement the young woman's gown and express her personality.
  1. Types

    • There are three basic types of corsages: the wrist corsage, the pin on corsage, and the hand-held nosegay. The pin on corsage is not as desirable now because of the popularity of strapless gowns. If a young woman chooses a pin on corsage, she usually wears it at the waist. The wrist corsage is now worn either near the wrist or high on the arm. Hand held nosegays are also popular. Large bouquets are as popular as a single flower. Other options are to wear flowers in the hair, as a necklace, or pinned to a pocketbook.

    Function

    • The purpose of the corsage is to complement the young woman's gown and to express her personality. A corsage can complement the gown with embellishments such as ribbon or flowers that match or contrast the color of the dress. Prom corsages today are so versatile, some young women choose traditional carnations and roses in soft colors while others want to be slightly eccentric with browns and blacks.

    Features

    • The corsage can have many different looks with different embellishments. Instead of ribbon, leather or bamboo give an eccentric look. Colored wires, faux gems, beads, rhinestones and crystals woven throughout the flowers give depth and interest to the corsage.

    Considerations

    • For a timeless look, there is nothing like calla lilies, orchids and roses. A dramatic look of single flowers in white with a touch of lace or beads catches attention. A combination of white calla lilies and roses is stunning. Another different look is black roses or a combination of black and brown. Red, gold, brown, orange, and burgundy are colors that create a unique look, as well.

    Significance

    • For those who want a keepsake, silk flowers are a good choice. Today, silk flowers are as elaborate as fresh flowers. Pearl or crystal bracelets decorated with fresh flowers make lovely wrist corsages that last once the flowers wilt.
Choices of flowers have expanded from the typical roses and carnations to calla lilies, orchids, delphinium, stephanotis and heather. The choices can be symbolic or unique.
